Da Si Xi Dim Sum 大四喜香港点心小厨 @ Taman Johor Jaya, Johor Bharu
It was a Saturday that I returned to Malaysia from work. We made our trip to Johor Jaya with an intention to try the seafood porridge in the same area. But too bad, the restaurant is only open until 3pm, my plan for seafood porridge as late lunch spoiled. Driving around the vicinity, found a Dim Sum restaurant which looks interesting.
Ta Si Xi located at Jalan Dedap area, combining two double-storey shops in a row, providing spacious dining space. Due to non-peak hour, the restaurant was quite empty. Differ from Hong Kong styled dim sum restaurant, there is no trolley with dim sum served from table to table (or perhaps because of the very few customers in the restaurant). We have to order our foods from the menu.

Deep Fried Prawn Dumpling in Salad 沙律明虾饺 RM3.80 |
Prawn dumpling is one of our choices (but it looks very different from what has been displayed in the menu), the outer layer is a bit burnt rendering the bad presentation. The filling with prawn meat and vegetables are good to taste, but the presentation itself cut off half of my appetite, despite I am a fan of prawn dim sum.

Shanghai Xiao Long Bao 上海小笼包 RM7 |
Their Shanghai Xiao Long Bao is recommended, the price is very reasonable. The skin is quite thin allowing us to inspect the filling through its semi-transparent skin. It is full with double-boiled soup and a gentle bite easily allows all the soup run into my mouth.
A close up of the crystal xiao long bao.

Har Gao 虾饺 RM3.80 |
The taste of Har Gao is just of average, nothing to shout with, but just sufficient to satisfy my craving for prawn dumpling.
|
Sao Mai 烧卖 RM3.80 |
|
Prawn Chee Cheong Fun 鲜虾猪肠粉 RM4 |
Their Chee Cheong Fun is quite nicely made, the silky smooth skin covering fresh prawn, served with fried shallots and their special made chilies sauce.
|
Fried Carrot Cake 炒萝卜糕 RM4.50 |
Their fried carrot cake is more to Singapore styled, which the dark soy sauce is omitted. Instead, every piece of carrot cake is clothed with a layer of egg, pan-fried till crispy but the inner remains soft and juicy. A stalk of tau geh reduce the greasiness of it.
|
Golden Bun 金沙包 RM4.50 |
Their golden bun looks normal and plain too, but it tastes damn good while it is served steaming hot.
The filling rich with salted egg yolk juices, simply tempting! But be cautious to avoid being scalded as it is super hot!
Overall, their foods are just of the average, but I would consider their price as reasonable and not overly pricey. If you are looking for dim sum after breakfast hour, Ta Si Xi still serves as a good place for dim sum.
