Nijyumaru 二重丸日本料理 @ Taman Sutera Utama, Skudai, Johore Bharu

Nijyumaru 二重丸日本料理 @ Taman Sutera Utama, Skudai, Johor Bharu

There is quite a long time did not enjoy a proper Japanese cuisine, just because I am not too familiar with reputable Japanese restaurant in JB and most of the time Sushi King is the only one I always saw in shopping mall. By chance, I get to know this Nijyumaru, a Japanese restaurant nearby Sutera Mall, it is always mentioned and ranked by Johorean as one of the famous and best Japanese restaurant in town. Our first visit to Nijyumaru was quite spontaneous, without making reservation. Yeah, we underestimated the restaurant as we thought walk in would be sufficient for us to enjoy their cuisine. The restaurant was so crowded, and we got our seat, but only can stay for an hour as the table was reserved by others on next hour. Just to avoid the awkward situation like us,  you can make an early reservation to secure your seat.
Their big name on the big wall, as everyone would not be avoided to see it. The combination of black and golden simply put up the modern Japanese feel, red lanterns hanging up around the restaurant, especially shining and attracts attention at night. The interior design is collocated and consistent with the exterior, the lighting is dim yet warm,  I can easily feel myself seated in a traditional Japanese restaurant from the ambiance and menu. Although we were only given an hour for dinner, we were lucky enough to be seated just next to the floor-to-ceiling-window, it sounds very romantic right? To be slightly better and enjoy the ambiance, I still prefer to sit on "Tatami" floor rather than modern table or just in front sushi bar (their sushi bar was too constrained).

Had a look on their menu and found most of the authentic Japanese cuisine. Their pricing is similar to Sushi Zanmai, which is quite worthy to savour good Japanese food. When in Japanese restaurant, baby octopus, bento and Japanese ramen are always the items we won't missed out. What surprised us is the big portion of food, it just does not look like one-man-portion, fully satisfied a big guy like me!
Spicy Baby Octopus  小章鱼  RM7
Marinated Baby Octopus was the first on table as appetizer, it tasted no much different from other Japanese restaurant, but we still love it very much. And Nijyumaru will be my first choice in future when I craving for baby octopus, because of the portion, RM 7 for quite a big plate.
Grilled Salmon with Sauce 酱烤鲑鱼片 RM16
The grilled salmon bento set comprises a bowl of rice, a large piece of salmon, salad, miso and fruits. As the leading role in the bento, the salmon is well marinated with sauce before grilled. If you like the fish to be tasted in its original flavour, there is an alternative that the fish to be seasoned only by a little bit of salt.
Nijyumaru Ramen 二重丸拉面  RM16
Craving for a bowl of authentic Japanese Ramen, decided to give their signature Nijyumaru Ramen a try. Didn't know it will be in the hot and spicy red colour when placing order, my fault for not really looking into the description. The ramen is topped with various seafood, Japanese fish cake and etc. The minced meat and corns makes the soup looks not so clean and clear, but quite in flavour.Out of my expectation, the ramen was not too spicy and is of the level that I still can tahan. Not tooo bad, at least the taste and the noodles are nearer to the real original ramen.

Friendly reminder, the time we left the restaurant, the crowd was queuing outside for a seat, so please be early or make early reservation to avoid crowd.

Mei Heong Yuen Dessert 味香园 @ Temple Street, Chinatown, Singapore

Mei Heong Yuen Dessert 味香园 @ Temple Street, Chinatown, Singapore

One of the raining day when we finish our dinner, we decided to have another round of dessert to end our day. After finish our dinner, we take a short tour around Chinatown. Supposedly, we planned to visit a dessert stall located at the roadside, but it was too crowded and got no seats for us to squeeze in. Alternatively, this shop which offering traditional dessert attracts our attention from far.
According to some write-up, this dessert shop is quite famous with their snowice. Read on the history, the dessert shop already stands at the same place for more than 10 years with continuous good business, even during the age that the market is taken over by Taiwanese and Hong Kong styled dessert. Their reputation can be proven by the unstopped customer flow and the three linked shoplots. Have a look on their menu and   I am happy that we were pampered with choices! Since we have few people, we decided to order different flavours and to see which is the best.
Mango Snow Ice 芒果雪花冰  $5
The ice itself is made from mango juice, and it is showered with mango syrup and served with fresh mango cubes, it is so mangolicious! The unique fragrance of mango always makes it a public lover and popular dessert. I always like the smooth texture of snow ice, the feeling of melting in mouth immediately is hard to described by words.
Soursop Snow Ice 红毛榴莲雪花冰  $5
Another local fruit selection, soursop with sweet and sour taste provides a very refreshing flavour. One of the reason Mei Heong Yuen can stand firm is that the ingredients they use are very pure and natural! soursop puree is added in the dessert, where you can still see the seeds at the bottom.
Durian Snow Ice 榴莲雪花冰  $5
Durian Snow Ice is a bad attempt anyway, the durian simply did not mingle well with the ice, and so the ice is quite tasteless, or it is specially made for foreigner's taste bud?
Almond & Sesame 杏仁芝麻雪花冰  $6
An interesting combination of black and white. Hot sesame paste and almond paste are not unique to us, how about the taste in cold? It was not that creamy as I thought, but I like the slight fragrance from almond and sesame. The almond flakes sprinkled on it adds a layer of crunchy texture to it.
Chocolate Snow Ice 巧克力雪花冰  $5
Chocolate flavoured is a very normal and public choice, but hard to make it outstanding. Yeah, we know kids like chocolate to match with marshmallow, the presentation make it so tempting. But just as I said, the compliment stopped on the presentation, taste is just on average, nothing much to shout with.
Sesame Snow Ice  芝麻雪花冰  $5
I still prefer this sesame snow ice, with strong sesame taste and at the same time very smooth in texture. Red beans on the four corners play a role too in perfect this dessert. Fabulous!

Although not every dessert suit my tastebud, but I still think Mei Heong Yuen deserve its reputation. Unlike many franchised dessert shop which use artificial and chemical flavouring, they still using pure and natural ingredients to perfect the dessert, delicious without compromising customer's health.

Xiang Xiang Zui 香香嘴 @ Chinatown 牛车水, Singapore

Xiang Xiang Zui 香香嘴 @ Chinatown 牛车水, Singapore

It is very rare to have public holidays in Singapore (as compared to Malaysia, our country has most public holidays in the world). So I decided to grab the opportunity to meet my fellow friends, this Xiang Xiang Zui at Chinatown is recommended by my friends, and I was told that this is the usual place for their gathering.
Chinatown is known as 牛车水 (literally "bull cart water") in Chinese, because water supply in Chinatown was principally transported animal driven carts in 19th century. Chinatown is also a district which retains Chinese significant historical and cultural significance. I came here with the hope to taste good Chinese and oriental food.
This area is their place of interest for meal during weekdays, they are too kind to share with me this good place. There is a row of Chinese restaurants where most of them are very crowded with customers, hardly get a good seat if you are late comers like us, we finally got our seat at back alley. Xiang Xiang Zui is specialized in serving authentic SzeChuan and GuangDong dishes. It sounds hot and spicy indeed!
Dry Pot Chicken 干锅鸡  $12.80
Our dinner tonight started with this dry pot chicken. Chicken dices are stir-fried with onion, lotus root slices and chilies paste. A very appetizing dish to go with white rice, the hot red colour definitely makes me drooling, really impatient to start my dinner! I especially like the lotus root slices which added some crunch and refreshing element to the dish.
Spicy & Sour Mixed Vegetables and Shredded Pork
鱼肉肉丝 $6.00
Another spicy dish came after dry pot chicken. Every things are shredded, its presentation is not too outstanding, but the colours from the ingredients are very inviting. I found the dishes offered by this restaurant are all very nutrient balanced, every meat dishes are paired with some vegetables, it fulfills Singaporean health requirement.
Braised Pork 红烧肉  $10.00
Pork belly is braised with potatoes, Despite there is a layer of oil on the surface, it is not really oily when I have a chunk of the pork belly, it is quite well cooked as the pork belly is smooth, soft and tender. Good matched with potatoes to reduce the grease.
Sauteed Lettuce 玻璃生菜  $4.50
After the heavy meat dish, here is a portion of green to refresh my taste bud.
Fried Eggs with Tomato 番茄炒蛋  $5.00
And not to forget to order a very simple home-cooked dish for us who are far away from home and craving for home-taste. I prefer the tomato to be mashed a little bit for the egg to absorb the sweetness and sourness from the tomatoes. Anyway, this is sufficient to compensate my feeling of home sick.
Seaweed And Egg Soup 紫菜蛋花汤  $4.50
Last but not least, we had a simple soup. Seaweed and egg soup is always my childhood favourite, which I can have a few bowl continuously. As cooking seaweed and egg soup does not require special skill, this soup is too common and nothing much to mention.

Conclusion, the food we order on that night was quite satisfying, but it would be better if the portion can be more decent We decide to have another round at another restaurant which my friends claimed that there are cheaper and nicer food there, and I will be pampered with more choices.

3 In 1 Glutinous Rice Cake & BM Yam Rice @ Taman Ungku Tun Aminah, Skudai, JB

3 In 1 Glutinous Rice Cake 华仔三合一招牌炸年糕 @ Taman Ungku Tun Aminah, Skudai

Glutinous Rice Cake is a traditional festive food for Chinese, especially during Chinese New Year. One of the best way to consume it is to deep fry it. I was always lazy to do it myself, as it is not so easy to make good fried glutinous rice cake. The alternative way is to buy the ready one, but is quite rare to get it in the market. Luckily, when I passed by Restaurant Wah Cai, I found there is a queue for this deep fried glutinous rice cake. So we decided to buy some as tea time snacks.
3-in-1 Chinese Cake raises your curiosity? The signature 3-in-1 deep fried glutinous rice cake here is sandwiched by yam and sweet potato and coated with a thin layer of batter. So customers are able to kill three (but not two) birds in one stone, enjoy yam sweet potato and glutinous rice cake at one go, definitely satisfy everyone's desire.
Beside the signature deep-fried glutinous rice cake, the stall also offers banana fritters, fried sweet potatoes, cempedak, yam and even the king of fruits--deep fried durian! Anyway, the price is not so approachable, a deep fried cempedak costs us RM2.50, whether the taste goes in line with the price? Let's check it out~
Deep Fried Cempedak 炸菠萝蜜 RM 2.50/pcs
The deep fried cempedak here is slightly different from normal mamak stalls. For ease of eating, the stall owner remove the seeds of cempedak before deep fry it, to make it worth the RM2.50, I believe the owner combines few pulps of cempedak to make a cempedak fritter. The size is so huge. The batter is quite well done with the crispy texture. I wonder if the cempedak has been specially picked, it is very sweet and taste good!
Banana Fritter 炸香蕉RM1.50/pcs
If cempedak proves too strong, go for banana fritter. Whole banana is used in perfect the banana fritter, ensure your satisfaction. The banana fritter was crispy on bite and banana filling inside was fresh and juicy. We feel great every bite of its.
Signature 3 in 1 Deep Fried Glutinous Rice Cake 三合一年糕 RM1.50/pcs
Last but not least, the signature 3 in 1 deep fried glutinous rice cake is on my plate now! A very huge piece indeed, gather all three gems in a piece. I vote this as the worthy deal, isn't it?
Interesting colours of the ingredient draws a very clear division between sweet potato, glutinous rice cake and yam. The combination is excellent and tantalizing, the glutinous rice cake with gula Melaka's fragrance and not too excessive sweetness, matched well with the potato and yam.

BM Yam Rice 槟城大山脚猪杂汤 @ Taman Ungku Tun Aminah, Skudai

This BM Yam rice set up in Taman Ungku Tun Aminah is alledgedly offers good and authentic yam rice originated from Bukit Mertajam. While its good name is spread around in a facebook page, as an authentic "BM Lang", definitely have to try on it.
The restaurant was not too crowded as I thought during my visit in the noon, it makes me suspicious over its fame, anyway, I would like to gamble my luck to get a true authentic BM yam rice.
Yam Rice 芋头饭  RM1.50
The yam rice is fragrant with scallots and dried shrimp, and big chunks of yam are hidden in the rice. Yet, it is not enough sticky as what I had in Bukit Mertajam.
The sambal chilies sauce is one of the similarity that I found. The sambal chilies sauce mixed with dark soy sauce is the special feature of BM yam rice, and it remains good here.
Salted Vegetable Pork Soup 咸菜猪杂汤  RM9 for Two
The salted vegetable pork soup is still as appetizing as it had been. The soup was really flavourful. It has pork liver, kidney, intestine, pork balls, etc. To add in some local element, silky smooth beancurd has been inserted in the soup. According to the owner, customers can refill the soup at no charge.

Overall, although the taste is far more different from the famous Bukit Mertajam's stall that I regularly visited, it still, console my homesick when I stay 600Km from my hometown.

"Plain Elegance" by Basilika

Plain Elegance

This lovely hand winding model appears delicately and lightly as a ballerina. The shape and size of the case was designed in accordance with the traditional style by "Poljot-International" - also known as "Basilika". Not coincidentally it‘s called "Plain Elegance".
Everything of this watch is subordinated under this motto: the case, the dial, the hands and the strap. Without any unnecessary decoration it “plays to the gallery” showing its elegant hour and minutes marks and the fine dial, also available in Mother-Of-Pearl version. The hands are made in classic shape and traditionally gold or chrome plated. Even the leather straps in both classic and feminine colours such as beige, light blue or pink, serve only one purpose - to be elegant and kept within the bounds.

The designer succeeded in providing the owner of this watch an elation when looking at the harmonic overall picture created by the interaction of the different components. Herewith, the tradition to produce classical and elegant mechanical watches could be kept.

Only a very flat movement is matching for this model, and the manufacturer found it: the Vostok calibre 2409. with only 3,95 mm of height, even though the date indicator had to be left out. In return for it the heart of the movement, the balance wheel, can be watched through a special glass window in the steel case back.

The price is fairly kept at a very competitive level: RM1660. Basilika is exclusively available at Red Army Watces Boutiques – Pavilion KL, Tropicana City Mall and One Utama.
