RM5 Chicken Chop Hutan Bandar @ Hutan Bandar Johor Bharu

RM5 Chicken Chop Hutan Bandar @ Hutan Bandar Johor Bharu

Craving for chicken chop but wan to avoid my pocket and wallet bleeding, we headed to the cheapest chicken chop stall in town. Yeah, here it is, near the Hutan Bandar Johor Bahru. It is of little be remote if you are not too familiar with the area, but you will definitely discover it at night because when the whole road is in dark, this is the only place with brightness and crowd! To make your trip more secure, please refer to the gps code at the bottom of this post.
There are three stalls linked together, the first stall on the left sells normal Malay goreng-goreng food, the second stall offers satay, but the attraction of crowd is still the western food stall which alleges to be the cheapest chicken chop in town with only RM 5. Besides chicken chop, they also serve burger, oblong, and lamb chop. Spy on other people table, the RM5 chicken chop contains 3 pieces of deep-fried chicken breast, fries and salad, the portion is super generous indeed. But my throat was not that comfortable with fried food, and I am not really into chicken breast, so we rather go for grilled chicken chop, grilled lamb chop and beef oblong.
Grilled Chicken Chop Set RM7.50
The dining atmosphere and environment were not that good, no candlelight, no cushion chairs and no fancy decoration, the table was not that clean as well, I have to admit this is a normal and typical mamak stall.  However, the grilled chicken chop with super nice presentation definitely surprised me. The white plate makes it look clean, classy and attractive. The chicken chop is accompanied by coleslaw and fries. The only sauce available is black pepper sauce, which is "membanjiri" on the chicken chop. The taste is quite not bad, and because they are using chicken thigh to do grilled chicken chop, the texture is just good. I do think it will be better if they can reduce the black pepper sauce which is too overwhelming.
Grilled Lamb Chop Set RM10
The portion of the Lamb Chop is quite surprising as well, two big pieces of lamb chop on the plate! The meat near the bone is just fantastic, not too fat and oily. But, since they are expert in chicken chop, but not lamb, it is pity that the texture is of a bit rubbery and overcooked. And lack of options for sauce, it tastes similar to the chicken chop because of the pepper sauce.
Oblong Beef  RM4
Oblong is another option. It tastes good while it is still warm, with the bread, it is super filling. Because of the cheap price, I overestimated the capacity of my stomach, and subsequently spoil my diet plan. This is the place I will re-visit indeed for the good food at reasonable and affordable price.

Shoon Fatt Bak Kut Teh 顺发肉骨茶 @ Taman Sentosa, Johor Bahru

Shoon Fatt Bak Kut Teh  顺发肉骨茶 Taman Sentosa, Johor Bahru

Shoon Huat bak kut teh 顺发肉骨茶 in Taman Sentosa is an established favourite among locals and Singaporeans. Shoon Huat's sign board says the business was founded in 1975. Shoon Huat provides the most typical Johor style Bak Kut Teh, the Teo Chew style Bak Kut Teh which is lighter and less oily. If you are health-conscious consumer, I bet you will like it as well. Due to the overwhelming good respond from the customers, Shoon Huat expanded his business to most of the district in Johor, and even in Malacca and Kuala Lumpur. But, since I am in Johor Bahru, I should go for the origin of the famous Bak Kut Teh!

AiYu Jelly Ice 爱玉冰 RM2.50
Soothing my throat with a bowl of icy refreshing Aiyu Jelly Ice. Nothing better than having this during a hot weather noon! The sweetness and sourness is just proportionate, opens up my appetite to cater the incoming heavy meal.
TauPok  豆卜  RM3
Preserved  Vegetables  咸菜  RM3
Few types of side dishes are offered by Shoon Huat, preserved vegetables is always a must for me along with Bak Kut Teh, while the Tau Pok looked so tempting, and I can't help myself to order it. FYI, it is super juicy and absorb all the aroma and essence from the gravy.
Bak Kut Teh 肉骨茶加料 with
Extra Enoki Mushroom and Pig Stomach  RM27
Bak Kut Teh here is served in claypot, to keep the Bak Kut Teh warm till the end of our meal. As you see, the soup is clear and of lighter colour. However, it is surprisingly flavourful and aromatic. Pick a pork rib and dip into the dark soy sauce with chilies, heavenly perfect! If you never feel enough with the good herbal soup, the best part to have bak kut teh here is that the soup is bottomless and refillable.

A family photo of the dishes! =) Actually this is not my first time to try Shoon Fatt Bak Kut Teh, the first tasting was at the KL branch, where the taste is rather different, the origin of Shoon Fatt does a better job anyway and truly deserves the reputation.

That's Cafe @ Jalan Tan Hiok Nee, Johor Bahru

That's Cafe @ Jalan Tan Hiok Nee, Johor Bahru

That's Cafe is the hidden gem in Johor Bahru downtown area. This small white wooden cafe  is so low profile until I won't even discover it if my friend did not tell me about this unique boutique cafe. A transparent window allows me to look into the small space, surprised by those little antique toys.

I am impressed with the homey feel when I first entered into the cafe. Got the feel of my grandma's house, with the strong sense of nostalgic. The furnitures are mixed and matched, placed randomly in the cafe, every single piece of table and chair is unique and not repeated.
The beverage bar on the right of the entrance. The colourful glasses and cups are placed in the wall cabinet, decorative and attractive enough. And it was like a treasure hunting when I walk into the cafe, everything looks interesting to me. Below are the antique toys that I found in the cafe.
The tiny post-piggy bank, so cute.
Britain military soldiers standing neatly on the red-coloured rack.
I owned a small piano like this during my childhood, did you?
The old fashion funfair machine and popcorn maker.
This cute wooden horse caught my attention on my way looking for wash room.
The old school bus taxi. Owner's childhood toy?

Passion Fruit + Yoghurt + Sour Plum  RM9.90
A costly beverage indeed, but the real and natural ingredients are used, I personally witnessed the making process, the owner used whole fresh passion fruit to blend with yoghurt and sour plum, very refreshing and appetizing. The texture is thick and creamy, it is rather dessert than a drink in my opinion.
Chicken Chop  RM16.90
I like their chicken chop too, served with mixed vegetables, vege spring roll and wedges. Can't see the potato wedges? It is hidden under the chicken chop, and very delicious after absorbing all the flavourful gravy. The spring roll is another part that I like,  fried till crispy and since the filling is made from vegetables, good for healthy-conscious consumer. A very home-cook style chicken chop full with the chef's effort and thought.
A close up look of the chicken chop, the chicken is grilled to perfection, tender and soft! Some western herbs spread on the top of the chicken chop, make it not only nice to see, but also delicious to eat.
Seafood Pasta  RM14.90
Seafood Pasta is my another menu on the night, flat noodles are used. Normally, flat noodles are not easy to handle, but the texture of this is just right, render the noodles springy and not to hard. The ingredients inside are quite surprising too, surprised by their generous portion of the fresh big prawn and squid. I super like their prawn, crunchy and fresh! A big like to it.
If you wonder where is the location of this nice restaurant, here it is, located at the street of heritage--Jalan Tan Hiok Nee. After dinner on Saturday, we walked around for their famous flea market just outside the door of the restaurant, kill two birds with a stone!

And the combination with some different colours makes the boot stand out from others in the market”.

Blackball 黑丸 @ Taman Indahpura, Kulaijaya, Johor

Blackball 黑丸 @ Taman Indahpura, Kulaijaya, Johor

Got no chance to visit BlackBall in Kuala Lumpur, so I got my first visit to BalckBall in Johor. Around JB area, I found that there are more BlackBall than the famous Snowflake in KL, yeah, it means that BlackBall is more dominating here. The BlackBall in Taman Indahpura Kulai is just newly opened and attracts residents nearby to visit this new outlet.
I visited this outlet after dinner, around 10pm. It was super duper crowded. All seats were occupied, people were standing to wait for seats, queuing to order, and some of them standing outside the shop to wait for their take-away.

The UFO as usual Taiwanese Dessert Shops use.
Blackball Signature 大黑丸  RM6.90
Grass Jelly, Yam Balls, Taro Q, Pearl, Red Bean

The signature dessert in the house, come with four toppings. The orangish potatoes balls are the tastiest, the texture is good, very chewy. The taro and potato chunks are not tasty at all, it is not the original fruits, but made from flour.
Cranberry Crushed Ice with Milk 蔓越梅牛奶冰  RM6.90
This cranberry crushed ice is good with the fruity flavour, with non-excessive sourish taste, very appetizing, can't help myself to have more.

We actually ordered another herbal jelly winter melon tea, but the beverage was bad and it smells burnt. Definitely not worth for the price. It is far more worsen than the winter melon herbal jelly in Meet Fresh.

HOUSE YOUR LUCK AND VITALITY IN THE YEAR OF THE BLACK WATER SNAKE

HOUSE YOUR LUCK AND VITALITY IN THE YEAR OF THE BLACK WATER SNAKE

“If you want 1 year of prosperity, grow grain. If you want 10 years of prosperity, grow trees. If you want 100 years of prosperity, grow people.”

The Chinese New Year or the Spring Festival is the most important festival on the Chinese calendar. The festivities traditionally begin on the first day of the first month of the Chinese calendar and end with the Lantern Festival celebrated on the 15th day of the New Year. The Chinese calendar follows a 12-year cycle and each year relates to an animal in the Chinese Zodiac. Year 4711, the year beginning February 10, 2013, is the Year of the Black Water Snake.

Ancient Chinese wisdom says a Snake in the house is a good omen because it means your family will not starve. New Year's Eve and New Year's Day are celebrated as a family affair, a time of reunion and thanksgiving. The presence of the ancestors is acknowledged on New Year's Eve with a dinner arranged for them at the family banquet table. The spirits of the ancestors, together with the living, celebrate the onset of the New Year as one great community. The communal feast is called "surrounding the stove". Hence, certain dishes served during this season bears momentous meaning to the family members such as Abalone defines good fortune, Bamboo shoots is for wishing that everything would be well, Fa Gao means prosperity cake, Gingko nuts brings of hope and silver, Jujube means prosperity and fertility, Mushroom strives for opportunities and longevity, Glass Noodles represents silver chains of luck, Oysters brings good fortune and Nian Gao is a homonym for a higher and better year. Taking all these key ingredients into considerations, Master Chef Heng once again conjured up a selection of spectacular affluence dishes for everyone to savour and commune this opulence time of the year together.
This year Grand Millennium Kuala Lumpur offers some of the city’s best dishes for the spectacular Lunar New Year on the 10th February 2013.  “There could be no better place to celebrate the Year of the Snake than at Grand Millennium Kuala Lumpur,” says Mr Peter D.
